Overview

CompassRock International provides asset management and property management services to the rental housing sectors globally. These sectors include build-to-rent (BTR)/multifamily, co-living/micro-living, student housing (PBSA), single family rentals (SFR), senior/retirement, and affordable/subsidized housing. The CompassRock team brings decades of hands-on experience with some of the largest, most complex and iconic properties around the world.

History

CompassRock was formed in 2011 during the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis when David Woodward partnered with global private equity firm Fortress Investment Group to create an affiliated asset management and property management firm. CompassRock grew rapidly reaching a peak size of over 30,000 apartment units and several million square feet of retail, office and industrial space under management.

The most notable asset that CompassRock managed was Stuyvesant Town / Peter Cooper Village (widely known as “StuyTown”) in New York City, the largest apartment community in the US totaling 11,232 units and approximately 30,000 residents of Manhattan. CompassRock’s turnaround of StuyTown culminated in a sale to Blackstone for $5.4 billion in 2015, the largest single-asset real estate transaction in US history.

Through direct hands-on experience from the US and UK, CompassRock has deep understanding of operations and supports the setting up of new property management (‘opco’) platforms. CompassRock provides strategic solutions and best practices to mitigate risk, diminish the learning curve and optimise the value of client investments. The team provides detailed building, unit and amenity design input to provide the optimum living and operational experience including building activation and overall placemaking.

Today

Since the StuyTown sale to Blackstone, CompassRock has continued to operate across the US with the platform no longer affiliated with Fortress. Given the continued expansion of the rental housing sectors globally, the CompassRock platform has now expanded internationally with current opportunities to manage BTR properties in the UK, Ireland and Spain.
